Using EU-SILC data and modules for 2005, 2011, 2019 and 2023, this project examines the magnitude and evolution of the inequality of opportunity in earnings in the EU. Our findings are threefold. First, we show that the inequality of opportunity in the EU has been gradually and consistently decreasing. Second, gender and parental education remain key barriers to opportunities in European labour markets. Third, we find suggestive evidence that public policies help promote the formation and effective employment of human capital.
